After two years, a San Antonio soldier is reunited with his military dog

San Antonio , TX – A retired military dog, Yyacob, was reunited with his former handler, Staff Sergeant Payton May, just for Thanksgiving after nearly three years apart.

The two had been inseparable during their time in the U.S. Army, working side by side and even sharing a bed. However, they were separated in 2022 when May was reassigned to a different base and Yyacob was sent to another location. The separation was hard on both, with Yyacob struggling to bond with a new handler, preventing him from continuing his service.

For over two years, May tirelessly sought to reunite with Yyacob, contacting the military and the American Humane organization for help. This fall, after seven years of service, including protecting figures like then-President Donald Trump, Yyacob retired and was finally brought back to May.

Thanks to the efforts of American Humane, the reunion was made possible just in time for Thanksgiving, making the holiday extra special for May, who had been missing his family.

The pair will now begin a new chapter, with May stationed in Italy next year, and Yyacob enjoying his well-earned retirement after years of service, including a tour in Iraq as part of an explosion detection team.
