Lovie the library dog gets kids to love literacy

MEMPHIS, TN – Lovie, an 8-year-old Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, plays a key role in a Memphis Public Library program aimed at improving children’s literacy.

Each week, Lovie visits library branches, where kids read aloud to her in a relaxed, non-judgmental setting. This one-on-one time helps improve their reading skills while providing emotional support. Lovie’s calming presence reduces stress, helping children feel more at ease as they read.

The program helps tackle Memphis’ literacy challenges, especially among third graders, by making reading fun. Lovie also brings comfort and joy to children and staff. Recently, she and her owner, Juana McCoy, were named Employee of the Month for the City of Memphis.
