Man bitten by bear saving his dog from attack: ‘I couldn’t let her die’

Volusia County, FL – A Florida man risked his own safety to save his dog from a bear attack outside his home in Orange City.

On December 20, Blake Sprout was letting his dogs out when three bears appeared. Before he could stop them, his dog Karen, a Pomeranian mix, ran straight toward the bears. One juvenile bear grabbed her and wouldn’t let go. In an attempt to save his dog, Sprout kicked the bear and threw rocks at it, but the bear bit him in the stomach before releasing Karen.

The bear then ran off with Karen, but Sprout’s efforts to scare it away worked, and the bear eventually dropped her. Karen needed stitches, and Sprout required rabies shots. Despite his injuries, Sprout doesn’t regret his actions, saying he couldn’t let his dog die.

Wildlife officials later captured and relocated the bears. Sprout, who is used to seeing bears in his neighborhood, is now more cautious when letting his dogs outside.
