Marine veteran’s service dog, named for 9/11 FDNY hero, joins ceremony at Ground Zero firehouse

New York, NY – The name of FDNY 9/11 victim Lt. Greg Atlas echoed once more through his Ground Zero firehouse with a Tuesday visit from a service dog named in the hero’s honor.

The frisky two-year-old, christened “Atlas” and donated to a Desert Storm veteran with the help of a city firefighters group, made himself at home inside Engine 10 during the uplifting visit with his new owner and ex-Marine Jim Grandchamp.

The Massachusetts man and his wife Michelle dropped off an embroidered service dog vest bearing the names of Atlas and five other Ladder 10 colleagues who died on 9/11, presenting the memento to “Ten House” Lt. Frank Stonitsch as firefighters gathered around.
