Meet the first therapy dog to join the Hays County Sheriff’s Office

HAYS COUNTY, TX – The Hays County Sheriff’s Office (HCSO) recently introduced its first therapy dog, Mirko, who is part of the Mental Health Unit.

Mirko’s role is to help individuals in mental health crises calm down and provide comfort during sensitive interviews with victims. Deputy Mohammad Zaqzouq, Mirko’s owner and handler, proposed the idea of a therapy dog for the department, believing Mirko’s calm temperament and training made him an ideal candidate.

Since starting his role, Mirko has already had a positive impact, particularly in situations like helping build trust with someone experiencing suicidal thoughts. Zaqzouq emphasized that therapy dogs, free from judgment or bias, are invaluable in fostering rapport and easing tense, delicate situations.
