‘Ru’s first day’: Meet Castle Rock PD’s therapy dog that has his own children’s book

Castle Rock, CO – Ru, the newest therapy dog at the Castle Rock Police Department, is helping students by reading to them in the classroom.

Alongside fellow therapy dog Buttercup and their handlers, Officers David Knight and Scott Gillespie, Ru visited Meadow View Elementary to read “Ru’s First Day”, a book designed to help students manage anxiety about school.

The story follows a pup preparing for middle school, encouraging students to overcome nervousness. The visit was part of an effort to support students with the challenges of transitioning to middle school.

The initiative, which has been present in Douglas County Schools for a few years, aims to bring smiles and comfort to students, with Ru’s book marking a new chapter in this therapy dog program.
