Huntington Beach, CA – Sugar the Surfing Dog, a 14-year-old rescue dog from Oakland, made history as the first dog inducted into the Surfers’ Hall of Fame in Huntington Beach, California.
Sugar, who was picked up from the streets of Los Angeles about 13 years ago by her owner, Ryan Rustan, has since become a surfing sensation. She has won multiple surfing titles, including the World Dog Surfing Championships and Surf City Surf Dog titles. Sugar is not only known for her impressive skills on the waves but also for her role as a therapy dog.
Rustan credits Sugar with helping him overcome struggles with mental health and addiction. He has also praised her for bringing joy to children, especially those with disabilities, through surf therapy programs.
The induction ceremony, which took place this past Thursday, saw Sugar’s paw prints permanently immortalized in concrete alongside surfing legends like Duke Kahanamoku and Gerry Lopez. The event celebrated Sugar’s unique impact on surfing culture and her positive influence as a therapy dog for children.
