From Tragedy to New Beginnings: Fire Chief Adopts Dog Rescued from Fatal Crash

Three Forks, MT – A tragic crash on I-90 in Three Forks, Montana, not only led to the loss of two lives but also brought about an unexpected new beginning for a dog in need of a home.

After a tragic crash on July 31, 2024, that claimed the lives of two people, a dog named “Smokey Bear” was rescued and eventually adopted by Three Forks Volunteer Fire Chief Keith Aune and his family.

The crash occurred around 7:10 a.m., involving a head-on collision. Law enforcement believes one driver may have made a U-turn on the interstate, though the details are still under investigation. While Chief Aune helped extract a dog from one of the vehicles, it did not survive. However, another dog, Smokey Bear, had been rescued by officers before Aune arrived.

Smokey was treated at Heart of the Valley animal shelter for internal injuries and a broken leg. Chief Aune and his wife visited him, and after Smokey warmed up to them, they brought him home.

The dog quickly became part of the Aune family and even adapted to life at the fire station. Chief Aune jokingly said Smokey might become their new “fire dog” with a few added spots to resemble a Dalmatian.
