Authorities announce memorial service for K9 killed in shooting, McMaster to attend

COLUMBIA, S.C. – The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED) announced they will be holding a memorial service to honor Coba, a K9 who was killed in the line of duty on Tuesday.

Coba, a K9 officer, was part of a team responding to serve a felony warrant to James Peterson at a home on Gravel Road. Inside the home’s hallway, Peterson shot and fatally wounded Coba when confronted by the K9 officer, his handler, and a deputy from the Newberry County Sheriff’s Office. Despite being rushed to an emergency veterinarian, Coba succumbed to his injuries later that day.

The ceremony will take place at the South Carolina Criminal Justice Academy at 5400 Broad River Road at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, June 19.
