Dog returns home after boat captain rescues her off Fort Myers Beach coast

LEE COUNTY, FL – A peaceful Sunday evening on the water for Lee County resident Kathleen Baker took a horrible turn.

Baker and her family were enjoying a boat ride near the Sanibel Causeway in the Gulf of Mexico when she realized her dog, a 2-year-old Australian Cattle dog named Eleanor, disappeared. After searching for two hours with no success and running out of fuel, hope seemed lost as darkness fell.

Meanwhile, Capt. Terry Johns of the Sanibel Harbour Princess dinner cruise and his passengers spotted a small head in the water near Fort Myers Beach. They rescued Eleanor, who was then taken home by a boat worker, Alex Lanier.

The next day, Baker reunited with Ellie after confirming through photos that the dog was indeed hers. Baker was overjoyed and relieved, planning to have Ellie wear a life vest on future boat trips. Capt. Johns, a retired Coast Guard member, reflected on the fortunate rescue, calling it a remarkable end to his time with the cruise.
