New York, NY – Politics has gone to the dogs in the Big Apple.
In New York City, a quirky political event is underway: the election for Honorary NYC Dog Mayor. This lighthearted competition, started by Stephen Calabria, aims to divert attention from real political issues and promote voter registration and pet adoption.
The election is structured like a March Madness tournament, with 15 canine candidates from across the five boroughs competing via social media platforms. The first round, held on July 24, saw Pepper the Mini Chocolate Dachshund advance after defeating Zayla the Rottweiler. The final two candidates will face off on November 4.
Candidates must have a public profile and live in NYC. Notable contenders include Puccini, a Yorkiepoo with a notable resume, and Shayna Maydele, a Coton de Tulear with a campaign focused on fixing radiators. For the first time, an adoptable dog, Will O’Wisp, is also running.
The election, which started in 2022, reflects a playful approach to politics, with previous winner Sally Long Dog, a Basset Hound, being praised for representing the “average New Yorker” and even meeting Mayor Eric Adams during her term.
