Rex, Long Beach fire’s first search-and-rescue dog, retires after 11 years

Long Beach, CA – Rex, a black Labrador retriever, celebrated the end of his 11-year career at the Long Beach Fire Department this week.

Rex was the department’s first search-and-rescue dog, and has been deployed across the state and nation to help during large-scale disasters, including to Texas for Hurricane Harvey in 2017.

Fire officials honored the 13-year-old pooch and his handler, Capt. Wade Haller, outside the Fire Department’s headquarters on Thursday.
