Therapy dog, beloved Boston Marathon icon Spencer is cancer-free ahead of 2022 race

HOLLISTON, Mass. — Spencer, the therapy dog who has become a favorite of fans and athletes at the Boston Marathon, is planning to return to the racecourse later this month after a positive turn in his high-profile cancer battle.

Spencer became an icon for holding his “Boston Strong” flag at his usual spot on the route near Ashland State Park, regardless of the weather, for eight years.

The 12-year-old golden retriever has been through a rough couple of years. He had a three-and-a-half-pound benign tumor removed in 2020 and doctors discovered a cancerous tumor about a year later.
