Three-Legged Dog Battling Cancer Rescues Baby Otter From St. Croix River

LAKELAND, Minn. – A Lakeland dog is being hailed a hero. The goldendoodle named Gus rescued a tiny baby otter in the St. Croix River.

The owners of Gus, a six-year-old dog, didn’t know if he could swim anymore after he had a leg amputated recently as part of treatment for cancer. He surprised them by rescuing an orphaned baby otter from a river.

The Wildlife Rehabilitation Center says the baby otter is too young to be in the water and should have been in the den with his mother. He’s since been transferred to another rehabilitation center for more care.
