Tennessee Firefighters Rescue Dog Trapped For 5 Days Atop 20-Foot Tree Following Hurricane Helene

Kingsport, TN – First responders searching for Hurricane Helene victims along the Nolichucky River in Washington County, Tennessee, made an incredible discovery: a dog stranded 20 feet up in a tree five days after the flood.

Believed to have been swept away and then trapped as the water receded, the dog, later identified as Athena, was rescued by members of the Kingsport Fire Department and Murfreesboro Police Department’s K-9 Search Unit. Using a ladder found in the debris, firefighters successfully retrieved her and provided food after the rescue.

Athena was later reunited with her family at a local shelter. Her miraculous rescue offered a glimmer of hope amid the devastation, which has resulted in eleven fatalities and numerous missing persons in the aftermath of the hurricane.
