HANCOCK, NY – Sander, a six-year-old yellow Lab, has become the first therapy dog at Hancock Central School, having been there for a month.
Kindergarten Teacher Marjorie Hull reports that Sander has positively impacted students’ moods and behaviors, especially helping those who are restless or emotional.
Sander was trained by Ashley Hull, Marjorie’s daughter, who initially aimed to make him a guiding dog before recognizing his potential as a therapy dog.
The presence of Sander has created excitement among students, aiding in stress reduction and boosting reading confidence, as children feel comfortable reading to him.
Sander visits the Kindergarten classes every Tuesday and Thursday, and Marjorie hopes to expand his role to other grades.
