Kathmandu, Nepal – On Thursday, Nepal celebrated Kukur Puja, a special day during the Tihar festival dedicated to honoring dogs.
Dogs were adorned with marigold garlands and vermillion pigment, and treated to generous meals. Unlike India’s Diwali, Tihar includes the worship of animals, with Kukur Puja recognizing dogs as messengers of Yamaraj, the god of death. The tradition involves honoring all dogs—pets, strays, and working animals—to show respect and please Yamaraj.
@pavanarai17 On this day, all dogs in Nepal, are offered treats and worshipped by placing a tika on their forehead and garlands of marigolds around their necks. This day marks the special relationship between humans and dogs, where dogs are thanked and celebrated for their loyalty, service and companionship. Don’t forget to appreciate all the furbabies for their loyalty and companionship on this auspicious day. Didnt get to celebrate last year but this year with my own gardens marigold i got to make garland for them 🥹 #kukurtihar #kukurpuja #tihar #tiharaayo #dogsday #momothegoldendoodle #nepal #nepali #nepalidog ♬ original sound – Saugat Rajbhandari
