Beloved Mary Free Bed therapy dog set to retire after 8 years

GRAND RAPIDS, MI – Mary Free Bed Rehabilitation (MFB) held a retirement celebration for Vandy, its first therapy dog specializing in animal-assisted intervention (AAI).

Vandy, who graduated from PAWS With A Cause (PAWS), has spent seven years supporting patients through physical, emotional, and speech therapy, making over 1,200 visits during her time at the hospital. Her presence helped patients with tasks like walking, sitting up, and building strength through activities like fetch and brushing.

Vandy’s legacy has inspired MFB’s AAI program, and while she is retiring, her impact will continue to be felt. Faith, another therapy dog, will continue to support patients. A special retirement tea was held, and Vandy toured the Inpatient Unit to say her goodbyes.
