KANNAPOLIS, N.C. – In a mix of heartbreak and overwhelming gratitude, a couple from Kannapolis is hailing their dog, “Big Baby,” as a lifesaver after he alerted them to a fast-moving fire early Saturday morning.
As the flames rapidly spread, “Big Baby” became the family’s unexpected hero. While Jennifer and Kelly were still asleep, the dog began growling and anxiously nudged open a curtain, revealing the fire raging on their back porch. Thanks to the dog’s quick thinking, the couple managed to escape just in time, before the fire engulfed their home.
Though the fire destroyed most of their belongings, the family escaped unharmed. Jennifer, who is in remission after battling breast cancer, called the dog her “guardian angel.” After they fled the house, she bravely returned inside to rescue “Big Baby.” The cause of the fire is still under investigation, and while one firefighter was injured, he is expected to recover.
