MASON, OH – The Mason City School District has introduced therapy and service dogs to support the mental health of students both inside and outside the classroom.
The initiative began in response to rising suicide rates and has since evolved into a successful program across all schools. Each school in the district now has therapy dogs that help students manage emotional challenges and stay focused on their work. These dogs provide unconditional comfort, fostering joy and alleviating stress.
The district employs 21 counselors and 6 therapy dogs, including Shiner, Gibson, Titan, and Coleby, who assist students from preschool through high school. With support from organizations like Mindpeace and Cincinnati Children’s Hospital, the program has been widely praised for its positive impact on student well-being.
