Grand Rapids, MI – A new Michigan law expands the use of therapy dogs in courtrooms, signed by Gov. Gretchen Whitmer on December 19, 2024.
The law, effective in the coming months, broadens eligibility for therapy dogs from victims 15 and younger to those 17 and younger. It also allows any therapy dog program recognized by the American Kennel Club to participate.
Therapy dogs have been used in courtrooms since 2018 to support victims, particularly in cases of child abuse, sexual assault, and crimes involving vulnerable adults. This expansion aims to help children testify by reducing anxiety and improving their ability to recall details.
The program, which relies on volunteer handlers, remains low-cost. Michigan joins 20 other states with similar laws.
