MILLE LACS, MN – A 14-year-old dog named Chester is alive thanks to two 9th graders from Andover who saw him struggling in a lake near Mille Lacs.
Jacob Jensen and Mason Willet, who are 9th graders, went fishing with Jacob’s grandfather, Vern Wagner, last Sunday on Sugar Lake. While fishing, they spotted a dog named Chester struggling to stay afloat. Jacob immediately jumped in to rescue Chester, keeping the dog’s head above water until they got him onto the dock.
Using CPR techniques they had learned three years earlier, Jacob began performing chest compressions on the dog, while Mason called the vet for advice. The vet suggested placing Chester in the sphinx position and pressing on his side. Mason helped with the CPR and looked for Chester’s owner while Jacob stayed with the dog as it recovered and vomited water.
It turned out Chester had recently been vaccinated for Lyme disease, which may have caused his troubles. The dog’s owner was grateful, and after some time, Chester began to recover. Vern Wagner praised the boys’ quick thinking and actions, expressing pride in their efforts.
