APD therapy dog Officer Kora wins national award for providing comfort during Helene

Asheville, N.C. – In Western North Carolina, where first responders have faced heightened challenges, Officer Kora, the Asheville Police Department’s therapy dog, has been named the 2024 winner of the First Responder Paws Therapy Dog Award after nearly 8,500 people voted nationwide.

Kora’s role has become especially crucial in recent months, offering vital emotional support to officers who have been impacted by trauma and stress. Her handler, Senior Officer Debbie LeCroy, was nominated for the award by Highland Canine. LeCroy was deeply moved upon hearing that Kora had won, as the therapy dog has played a central role in helping officers cope. Kora provides comfort through compression therapy, offering a calming presence by laying on officers in need of emotional support.

LeCroy shared how Kora greets officers with hugs and high fives, creating a sense of security during difficult times. The award is a testament to Kora’s impact, and LeCroy hopes it will inspire other agencies to adopt therapy dogs, recognizing the positive difference they make in supporting first responders’ mental well-being.
