Blind, deaf dog rescued after 3 days in Peoria backyard tortoise den
Peoria, AZ – In a heart-stopping rescue, 15-year-old Chihuahua Lucy was saved after being trapped for three days in a deep tortoise den in her owners’ Arizona backyard.
Blind and deaf, Lucy fell into the den on Friday night, and initial rescue attempts by the Arizona Humane Society and local fire department were unsuccessful.
When all hope seemed lost, Samson’s K9 Search & Rescue, led by Kim Powell, stepped in after a desperate plea for help on Facebook. The den, over 9 feet deep with winding tunnels, presented a major challenge. But using custom snare equipment, a camera, and plumbing tools, Powell and her team spent six hours carefully rescuing the fragile dog.
Lucy is now recovering at BluePearl Pet Hospital, and her family is raising funds for her medical care. Powell, whose organization is self-funded, emphasized that no one should hesitate to seek help in emergencies due to financial concerns, saying, “If you love your dog, they deserve the chance for help.”
