PORTLAND, OR – A U.S. Coast Guard aircrew from North Bend rescued a 55-year-old legally blind man and his dog from the Rogue River Trail Monday.
The man, hiking with a friend since early July, suffered heat exhaustion symptoms on July 6. With no cell service, his friend went to Gold Beach to call 911.
A Bureau of Land Management ranger and sheriff found him by 9 a.m., unable to walk in rugged terrain. The Coast Guard deployed a rescue swimmer, who hoisted them to safety. They were then taken to a hospital at Grants Pass Airport for medical evaluation.
