BEDFORD, VA – The Bedford Fire Department successfully reunited an elderly dog with its owner after the animal fell into a 7-foot-deep sinkhole behind a Shell Station on Burks Hill Road.
The dog, who had vision and hearing impairments, was trapped underground due to the sinkhole on Sunday, September 8.
With no animal control officers on duty, firefighters stepped in to help. They attached a rope to a pole and carefully expanded the hole to access the dog.
The rescue was successful, and the fire department said the dog was returned to its owner without any injuries from the underground adventure.
