BANNER ELK, N.C. – In the wake of Hurricane Helene, a sense of heartbreak and loss blankets western North Carolina as communities grapple with the aftermath of the storm.
Amid the devastation, therapy dogs like Poppy are providing a much-needed source of comfort and connection. At an insurance camp in Banner Elk, volunteers offered assistance to storm victims, and Poppy, a friendly therapy dog, brought smiles and emotional support to attendees.
Owner Kate Younger, whose home was undamaged, has been actively volunteering in hard-hit areas, helping to distribute food and supplies. She noted the healing effect of Poppy, who has been a source of comfort for those affected. The insurance camp will continue its services, along with a victim assistance center set up in Boone.
