El Paso County in Colorado Bans Paw Prints on Marriage Certificates

El Paso County, CO – In Colorado, a trend has emerged where couples have their pets, usually dogs, stamp paw prints on their marriage certificates.

However, El Paso County Clerk Steve Schleiker announced that his office will no longer accept certificates with paw prints, following the lead of Denver and Arapahoe counties.

The decision was made due to residue from paw prints damaging scanners and causing some licenses to be rejected.

While most counties still allow paw prints for self-solemnizing couples, Schleiker stressed that previous certificates with paw prints remain valid. Discussions are underway to create a more consistent statewide policy.
