TUSCALOOSA, AL – At DCH Regional Medical Center in Tuscaloosa, patients and caregivers enjoy weekly visits from therapy dogs, including Maggie and Gracie, who are part of the animal-assisted therapy group Hand in Paw.
Maggie, a well-loved therapy dog, has been working with her handler, Carol Develice, for seven years. During their visits, Maggie provides emotional support and companionship to patients, brightening their days during challenging times, such as treatment for serious illnesses.
Vernice Smith, currently battling B-cell lymphoma, experienced this firsthand when Maggie visited her during chemotherapy. For Smith, the timing of Maggie’s visit was perfect, providing a much-needed distraction and comfort during a tough moment.
In addition to Maggie and Gracie, Hand in Paw also includes therapy cats, further expanding the range of comfort available to patients. To become a therapy dog, candidates must complete obedience training, undergo screening, participate in a four-week workshop, and pass an evaluation, with reevaluations every two years.
The therapy animals play a vital role in creating a supportive and nurturing environment for patients and their families, reminding everyone of the healing power of companionship and love.
