‘A bond that is pretty irreplaceable’: Canines for Service train dogs to help veterans

WILMINGTON, N.C. – More than 3,000 U.S. veterans use service dogs, according to the Department of Veterans Affairs.

September is Service Dog Awareness Month, and one local organization is doing its part to help veterans overcome challenges.

Canines for Service, established in 1996, trains service dogs to assist veterans with conditions like PTSD and mobility issues. The training involves extensive work with the dogs to address specific needs.

Lead trainer Reagan Stauffer, inspired by the transformative effects of service dogs, works closely with volunteers to ensure dogs are well-prepared. Veteran Laura Hawley, who adopted a service dog named Perry, now helps others through the program.

Both Stauffer and Hawley highlight the significant improvements in veterans’ lives thanks to these service dogs.
