Comfort dogs help ease students’ stress in Billings schools

Billings, MT – The Billings School District has introduced three comfort dogs in middle schools to support students’ mental health amid a growing mental health crisis in Montana.

Rob Vickery, a school resource officer, brings his Newfoundland puppy, Indy, to Medicine Crow and Castle Rock middle schools, believing the dogs can help students cope during difficult times.

Comfort dogs like Indy have been shown to reduce stress and anxiety. Students have responded positively, often seeking Indy for comfort during tough days, even during a recent school shooting threat.

The program, funded by the officers using their personal pets, also includes Targhee at Lewis and Clark Middle School and Huck at Riverside Middle School, with plans to expand to all schools in the district.

The dogs have created a supportive environment, making it easier for students to connect with staff.
