The shaggy, large Zyrgyz wolfhounds were forced to fight at a stadium in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan – an impoverished former Soviet republic. Their battles were set up by a local dog breeders club with the aim of finding the dog best suited to improve the Asian Shepherd breed, organisers claimed. The dogs were encouraged to latch on to each other, ripping their opponent’s ears and face.
